ALFI-Youth Inter-School On-the-Spot Essay Writing Contest CBTFebruary 12, 2005, Narra Youth Club

ALFI Youth organized the first Inter-School On-the-Spot Essay Writing Contest on Feb. 12, 2005 at the Narra Youth Club in Las Pinas. Competing were 24 female high school students from six Las Pinas and Alabang schools. Nadia Velasquez won first place in the Senior Category for her essay, "Filipino Youth: Speaking Out Against Population Control.” Erika Hoffmann won first place in the Junior Category for “Chaste Teens Today, Strong Families Tomorrow.” Both are from Southville International.

The Board of Judges included Atty. Lita Hidalgo and Meg Francisco of ALFI, journalists Cynthia Evidente and Denise Santos-Dizon, and English professors Titing Villamor and Vissia Carillo.

A briefing was given to all contestants on Feb, 5, 2005. Topics were “A Call to Modesty “given by economist Jovy Dacanay of the University of Asia and the Pacific, and “Population: Boon or Bane” by schoolteacher Josie Yuviengco of PAREF Woodrose. The essay-writing contest successfully raised awareness of pro-family issues among its participants.
